Police confirm the death of 26-year-old Dahana Jean; unverified claims about immigration and a fatal headlock raise broader concerns.
By The Haitian Pulse | June 15, 2025
The Haitian-American community is in shock following the tragic death of Dahana Jean, a 26-year-old woman found dead in her Brooklyn apartment earlier this week. Her partner, John Roseau, 32, was arrested in Buffalo, NY, after he reportedly walked into a police station and informed officers that his girlfriend had died days earlier.
According to authorities, the arrest took place on June 12, 2025, after Roseau’s statement prompted a wellness check at the couple’s apartment on New York Avenue. Officers arrived to discover Dahana’s body in an advanced state of decomposition. Her death has been ruled a homicide, with trauma to the neck identified as the cause.
Roseau has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He remains in custody and has not yet entered a plea.
Alleged Motives and Immigration Questions
In the aftermath of the arrest, community members have raised unverified claims that continue to fuel public discussion:
-
It’s alleged that both Roseau and Dahana entered the U.S. under the Biden humanitarian parole program for Haitians. This has not been officially confirmed.
-
Some reports suggest that Roseau may have been attempting to flee to Canada and was intercepted near the Buffalo border, where he revealed the death.
-
Initial confusion around the method of death has been clarified by community members as a headlock or chokehold, not the use of an object.
A Life Cut Short
Friends and neighbors describe Dahana Jean as a kind, soft-spoken woman who had only recently started building her life in the United States.
“She didn’t deserve this,” one neighbor said. “She was just beginning to live.”
A Community in Mourning
This tragedy has reignited discussions on domestic violence, mental health, and the vulnerabilities many immigrants face while adjusting to life in a new country with limited support. As the case unfolds, the Haitian-American community mourns the loss of a bright young soul whose life ended far too soon.
