ALERT: 20 Million Eggs Recalled Over Salmonella Risk

Walmart, Safeway, Kroger, and More Involved as The Haitian Pulse Calls for Immediate Vigilance Across Our Communities

United States - A serious public health risk is emerging from supermarket shelves, and The Haitian Pulse is on the frontlines, making sure Haitian households across the U.S. stay safe and informed.

Over 20 million eggs — roughly 1.7 million dozen — are being recalled across 17+ states after tests confirmed salmonella contamination. The affected eggs, distributed to Walmart, Safeway, Kroger, Ralphs, and other independent and chain supermarkets, were produced by August Egg Company, a division of Gemperle Enterprises, based in Hilmar, California.

What Is Salmonella — And Why Is It Dangerous?

Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can cause serious illness, especially in children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. According to the CDC, it’s responsible for:

  • 1.2 million illnesses

  • 26,000 hospitalizations

  • 450 deaths every year in the U.S.

Ingesting contaminated food — like undercooked or raw eggs — is one of the most common ways salmonella spreads. Once inside the body, symptoms may include:

  • Fever

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Abdominal cramps

In severe cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and become life-threatening.

Egg Recall Details — What You Need to Check

Consumers are urged to immediately inspect all eggs in their home, especially if purchased from the listed retailers. Here’s how to identify the contaminated batches:

  • PLANT CODES: P-6562 or CA5330

  • JULIAN DATES: Between 032 and 126

  • SELL-BY DATES:

    • Walmart: March 4 – June 19

    • Other Retailers: March 4 – June 4

These eggs were distributed across:

California, Washington, Illinois, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana
And via Walmart’s wider network:
Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin

  • If you have any eggs matching the above codes or dates, do not eat them. Return them to the store or safely dispose of them.

Why This Matters for the Haitian Community

Many Haitian-American families rely on affordable groceries from big retailers like Walmart, especially in urban hubs such as Miami, Brooklyn, Boston, Atlanta, and Orlando. Eggs are not just a staple — they’re part of our everyday meals, from morning bouillon to spaghetti ak ze.

Even though Florida, New York, and Georgia weren’t directly listed in the recall, Walmart’s extended distribution makes it very possible that contaminated products reached these states. It’s also common for goods to be shipped across regions or resold, making unofficial exposure routes a real risk.

The Haitian Pulse’s Commitment

We are sounding this alert with urgency and care. The Haitian Pulse exists to advocate, inform, and protect our people — especially when systemic communication gaps leave our communities vulnerable.

We call on:

  • Community centers

  • Haitian churches

  • Grocery stores

  • Local radio hosts

  • Facebook groups and WhatsApp circles

…to help spread the word immediately.

Our elders, children, and those without regular access to mainstream news must be reached.

Community Action Steps:

  • Inspect all egg cartons in your home.
  • Look for plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 and Julian dates 032–126.
  • Dispose of or return affected eggs.
  • Watch for symptoms and seek medical care if you suspect exposure.
  • Share this information widely — especially with elders and recent immigrants who may not see English-language alerts.

Pro Tip: Pasteurized Eggs Are Safer

According to August Egg Company, they are now diverting all eggs to a pasteurization facility, which kills harmful pathogens. But until new inventory arrives, consumers should remain cautious when purchasing eggs — and cook them thoroughly.
